ARMED TEACHERS: WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

(C) JOHN FANSMITH 2018

As I expected, SANDY HOOK: HOPES, DREAMS, AND THE NRA and BIG CLIPS AND BUMP STOCKS turned out to be not the only two pieces in what I am calling “The Second Amendment” Series. ARMED TEACHERS: WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG? was started after Parkland as my response to the proposal by President Trump and the NRA that the way to prevent future school violence was to have teachers carrying guns in the classroom. Once again, a paper collage using recycled paper and cardboard, scissors and a paper punch. Matted and framed to 13” x 19”

Stormbreak on the Maine Coast

(C) JOHN FANSMITH 2018

Many years ago I was on an Outward Bound Expedition off the coast of Maine when a nor’easter with gale force winds struck – making a memorable event even more so. STORMBREAK ON THE MAINE COAST is my effort to capture that memory in stained glass and paper clay. 8 ½” 6” X 1 ½”.

RUST BELT

(C) JOHN FANSMITH 2018

RUST BELT is an entirely experimental piece which involved inking a hard plate, applying some resists, adding additional ink and then removing the resists before printing. It was intended to answer the question: “I wonder what would happen if…?” The title, RUST BELT, came after it was completed and I had watched part of a Donald Trump rant the night I completed it. Matted and framed to 24” x 18”.

EBONY AND IVORY

(C) JOHN FANSMITH 2018

In 1982 Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder recorded Ebony and Ivory”, a number-one single. Subsequently, Paul McCartney also recorded the song with Michael Jackson. Since I can’t sing and have no musical ability, there are no audible elements to my EBONY AND IVORY, only visual ones. Hand built and raku fired using my own paper clay, EBONY AND IVORY is 7” x 6” x 5”.

ELATION

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

To me, elation is an emotion with a strong cognitive base – what you feel when a plan comes together, perhaps better than expected. ELATION combines a sense of fireworks going off – not as an isolated event but as a culmination. A hand inked and hand pulled dark field monotype, part of the “Cognitive Emotions” Series, ELATION is matted and framed to 24” x 18”.

ANXIETY

(C) JOHN FANSMITH 2018

Anxiety is an emotion which can have a very significant cognitive element – or a very small one.  Part of the “Cognitive Emotions” Series, ANXIETY is a hand inked and hand pulled dark field monotype which, with its sharp palette and internal lines is intended to put you on edge. It is not a comfortable or comforting piece. Matted and framed to 18” x 14”.

UPDATE: MRAC 10th Annual Juried Show

UPDATE:  The Manayunk Roxborough Art Center (recently awarded the 2018  Classic Towns People’s Choice award for Best Art Gallery/Workshop in Roxborough) is not moving their 10th Annual Juried Show but is keeping it at the Green Street location.  Two of my Whimsical One-Liner drawings, BAD SUSHI and HALF ASS DRAWING (L-R, above) are on exhibit.  A Whimsical One-Liner is a single line drawing that never crosses itself and in which the title and image together are a play on words. In the case ofBAD SUSHI and HALF ASS DRAWING, I do hope that everyone concludes that the titles refer to the subject matter of the drawings, and not to how they were executed.
